BIG BOY COMES TO TOWN

On Thursday August 12, eleven members of the Eastern Oklahoma section met at Jackie Cooper Mercedes Benz and drove to Wagoner Ok to see the Union Pacific 4014 steam locomotive as it was making its tour through ten states in the Midwest USA.

Weighing in at 1.2 million pounds, the Big Boy makes a big impression in communities it visits, reminding us of bygone days and the important role the railroad continues to play in our global economy.

Twenty-five Big Boys were built exclusively for Union Pacific, the first of which was delivered in 1941 to handle the steep terrain between Cheyenne WY and Ogden UT. Of the eight “Big Boys” still in existence, No. 4014 is the world's only one in operation.  The rest are scattered at museums across the country.

After the whistle stop, members headed for lunch at the Amish Cheese house in Chouteau OK
